It’s very rare in our field that you get the opportunity to actually build over water since so many lakes and rivers are governed by both state and federal rules and regulations. In this case, our clients had purchased a unique 4 acre parcel, bordering a lake in a private community where the lot is divided into two sections by an inlet and where we actually could imagine a house that floated above the water. The smaller portion of the property to the east of the inlet hosts the guest house, while the larger portion to the west accommodates the main house, a tennis court, and other amenities. An open-air bridge serves as a connecting element, creating an airy space to enjoy the natural surroundings and the evening breezes above the water.
A meandering tree-lined driveway leads from the gate to the entry courtyard, offering an initial glimpse of the lake and the home. The drive court is separated from the garage and tennis court by a linear water wall, framing the entry court and directing visitors to the entry itself. The entry hall focuses on the inlet with a long horizontal water feature that creates a tranquil connection to the water below and leads directly into the main living space. The house is orientated with the primary rooms focusing on the lake. A sweeping roof identifies the main living space, kitchen and family room, which connects directly out to a cabana by the pool. The infinity pool creates an intense connection to the lake beyond from all the primary spaces before rotating back ninety degrees and connecting under a glazed dining room floor to the entry water feature. An additional sweeping roof form indicates where the entrance lies and contains offices and workspaces for both of the clients. To maintain a sense of privacy and calm, the sleeping and wellness areas are located on the west side of the property, away from the busier areas. These rooms are designed around an internal zen garden courtyard, fostering relaxation and a strong connection to nature.
The clients’ passion for contemporary art informs the design, with an emphasis on neutral backgrounds (predominantly white walls) to serve as the perfect canvas for their art collection. The house is designed to maximize glazing, allowing ample natural light to flood the interior and highlight the artwork while offering unobstructed views of the lake. The design concept integrates art, nature, and living space into a harmonious and visually striking lakeside retreat, creating a home that feels both expansive and intimately connected to the surrounding environment.
