BIRDS NEST

Los Angeles, CA

Perched high up in the famous Bird Streets neighborhood of West Hollywood, this home takes advantage of incredible views of the entire Los Angeles basin from the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and downtown Los Angeles to LAX.

From the street, parking and a pedestrian entry leads through a metal screened gate to a quiet garden space on the main level. Sharing the entry garden are two bedrooms and the family room, which itself bridges the lower-level courtyard below, imagined as a cool tropical retreat full of plants providing privacy to some of the living spaces below. At one end of the lower-level courtyard is a glass-clad stairwell, connecting the garage at the midpoint, while a cascading waterwall sits on the opposite end with the entry bridge traversing the between.

The entry door opens directly into a great room consisting of the living, dining, and kitchen, while the primary bedroom is pushed towards the view. The infinity edge pool spans the entire rear property, blurring the line between sky and earth. Descending the stair down leads directly into an entertainment space, complete with bar, media room, and views through the lower-level gym to the city beyond. Retractable walls of glass open the space to the garden, shared by two bedrooms with courtyard access. The gym and an additional guest room occupy the view side of the lower level, opening to an expansive terrace overlooking the city below. Both sides of the gym were glazed to allow light to penetrate deep into the lower-level plan.

Steel ornamentation is expressed throughout the design, with clear story windows and sliding walls of glass that are meant to blur the distinction between interior and exterior spaces. A palette of warm wood of white brick reminiscent of mid-century homes in the neighborhood complements the steel and glass, creating a comfortable living environment.
