BIRDS NEST

Los Angeles, CA

Perched high up in the famous Bird Streets neighborhood of West Hollywood, this home takes advantage of incredible views of the entire Los Angeles basin - from the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and from downtown Los Angeles to LAX.

Arrival begins at the street, where discreet parking and a pedestrian path guide visitors to a metal-screened gate. Beyond lies a serene entry garden, a quiet moment of pause before entering the home. This garden is shared by two guest bedrooms and a family room, which hovers above a lush, lower-level courtyard. The courtyard—envisioned as a shaded tropical oasis—features dense planting that offers privacy to the living spaces below while connecting to the landscape.

Arrival begins at the street, where parking and a pedestrian approach lead to a metal-screened gate. Passing through, one enters a quiet garden that sets the tone for the home—a space of calm and seclusion suspended above the city. The entry garden is shared by two guest bedrooms and a family room, which together frame the space and offer a preview of the layered architectural experience to come. The family room bridges over the courtyard below, allowing glimpses of the tropical landscape that awaits on the lower level.Crossing the garden, the entry threshold takes the form of a bridge, suspended above the lush courtyard and flanked by a glass-enclosed stair tower on one end and a water wall on the other. This transitional space opens directly into the great room, where living, dining, and kitchen areas are united in a single, open volume. The room orients entirely toward the view, with floor-to-ceiling glass opening to an infinity edge pool that stretches across the rear of the property. The pool blurs the boundary between interior and landscape, earth and sky.

The primary suite is positioned at the far edge of the upper level, offering privacy and the most expansive vantage point. Large sliding glass doors open the bedroom directly to the pool terrace, creating a seamless connection between rest and view. Every element of the upper level is designed to maximize openness and the sense of being perched above the city.

The central stair connects all levels of the home, enclosed in glass and surrounded by the vertical landscape of the courtyard. As one descends, the sound of the water wall and dense planting of the garden below come into focus. The lower-level courtyard forms the heart of this level, bringing in light and natural ventilation while creating privacy for the rooms that surround it.

At the base of the stair is a generous entertainment space, complete with a bar and media lounge. Sliding glass walls retract to open the entire level to the courtyard garden, extending the living area outward. Two bedrooms on this level also open to the garden, reinforcing the idea of indoor-outdoor living. Toward the rear, the gym and an additional guest suite take full advantage of the home’s site, with direct access to an expansive terrace and uninterrupted city views beyond. The gym is fully glazed on both sides to allow natural light to flow across the plan and connect the spaces visually.

The material palette throughout the home is restrained yet warm—steel ornamentation is used in framing elements and sliding glass systems, while a combination of natural wood and white brick recalls the mid-century homes that define the neighborhood. Clerestory windows and carefully detailed openings reinforce the design’s intent: to blur the line between interior and exterior, building and landscape, structure and sky.
